2024 BMW Championship odds, predictions, field: Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy selected by advanced golf model
If Viktor Hovland finishes atop the leaderboard at the 2024 BMW Championship this week, he will become just the second golfer to successfully win the event two consecutive years, joining Patrick Cantlay (2021-22). Play begins Thursday, Aug. 22 at Castle Pines Golf Club. Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, enters this week’s event as the +320 favorite according to the latest 2024 BMW Championship odds. He is followed by Schauffele (+650), McIlroy (+1000) and Collin Morikawa (+1200) on the PGA odds board. Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama are all going at +1800. Top 2024 BMW Championship Golf Predictions
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top favorites, is not in the top five this week. McIlroy struggled at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, finishing T-68, which resulted in him falling to fifth in the FedEx Cup standings. Coupled with missing the cut at the Open Championship, the US Open final-round mistakes could haunt McIlroy until the end of the summer.
McIlroy has won only one of his last 13 BMW Championship appearances, which occurred in 2012. He has had top-five finishes three times in his last eight BMW Championship tournaments, but he has never finished in the top three since his 2012 win. Driving distance has never been an issue for McIlroy and he ranks second in driving distance this year, but he is only 83rd in driving accuracy. Putting has been his biggest problem this year, as he is outside the top 40 in total putting and putting average, while ranking 70th in Strokes Gained: Putting. McIlroy has always been a popular bet because of his name and the model does not see value in him at his current price.
The model also examines where Schauffele ends up. Schauffele is absolutely blazing through the second half of the 2024 PGA Tour season. He won the first two majors of his career at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship and is coming off a T-3 performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week.
The 30-year-old has finished T-15 or better in each of his last eight starts on the PGA Tour, earning two wins and six top-10 finishes during that span. He’s been able to rack up those positive results thanks to his stellar iron play. Schauffele currently ranks fourth in Strokes Gained: Approach to Greens (0.812) and 14th in Greens in Regulation percentage (70.07%). He’s sixth in Strokes Gained: Putting (0.617) and eighth in putting average (1.718), so he’s confident he can be back in contention this week.
