2024 NHL Awards Tracker: Connor Bedard named Rookie of the Year, Nathan MacKinnon wins second Hart Trophy

The NHL announced the remaining winners of some of the game’s biggest awards during the 2024 NHL Awards held in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Several awards were handed out ahead of Thursday’s show. The Jack Adams Award was given to Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet, while the Selke Trophy was given to Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov last month.

There were some thrilling contests for some of the league’s top awards. Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon won the second Hart Trophy of his career as the league’s MVP. MacKinnon beat out Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid to win the honor.

May 14: Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award

Winner: Jacob Trouba (D, New York Rangers)

This award is given every year “To the player who exemplifies the finest leadership qualities for his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season and who plays a leading role in advancing the game of hockey in his community.” The award is selected by former Rangers great Mark Messier, who receives suggestions from league personnel. Trouba helped lead a Rangers team that earned the most points (114) and wins (55) in franchise history. The Rangers defenseman recorded 22 points (three goals and 19 assists) in 69 regular-season games, while also recording 191 hits and 183 blocked shots. Trouba was part of the Rangers’ penalty-kill, which ranked third in the entire league with an 84.5% success rate.

May 15: Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

Winner: Connor Ingram (G, Utah)

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and devotion to hockey.” Before receiving help from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in 2021, Ingram nearly had to retire from the game due to an undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. The Arizona Coyotes signed Ingram off waivers in October 2022 and he has been on the rise ever since. The veteran netminder posted a 23-21-3 record, 2.91 goals-against-average and .907 save percentage in 50 regular-season games. Ingram also recorded a league-best six shutouts during the 2023-24 campaign.

May 18: Frank J. Selke Trophy

Winner: Aleksander Barkov (C, Florida Panthers)

The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the forward who ,The best in the defensive aspects of the game.” Barkov has now won the Selke Trophy for the second time in his NHL career. This is also the third time Barkov has been a finalist for this honor in the last four seasons. He won 57.3% of his 1,100 face-offs during the regular season, while ranking fifth among NHL forwards with a +33 rating. In addition, the Panthers forward also recorded 104 hits while stopping 50 shots during the 2023-24 regular season.

May 22: Jack Adams Award

Winner: Rick Tocchet (Vancouver Canucks)

The Jack Adams Award is presented annually to the NHL head coach who has “contributed most to the success of his team.” Tocchet won the award in just his second season as Canucks head coach. He became the third Canucks head coach to win the Jack Adams Award, joining Pat Quinn (1991–92) and Alain Vigneault (2006–07). Tocchet received 82 first-place votes to earn the honour. The 60-year-old Tocchet led the Canucks to a 50–23–9 (109 points) regular-season record and their first Pacific Division title since the 2012–13 campaign, when it was known as the Northwest Division.

May 28: King Clancy Memorial Trophy

Winner: Anders Lee, LW, New York Islanders

The King Clancy Trophy is awarded annually to the player who demonstrates leadership qualities both on and off the ice, as well as his leadership in the community. Islanders forward Anders Lee earned this honor in 2024 for his work with the Kahn Foundation. Lee receives a $25,000 donation from the NHL to a charity of his choice for earning this honor.

30 May: Lady Byng Memorial Trophy

Winner: Jacob SlavinD, Storm

The Lady Byng Trophy is awarded to the player who shows top-level sportsmanship on the ice in a given season. Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin earned this honor for his performance during the 2023-24 season. Slavin earned 37 points (six goals and 31 assists) while committing only four minor penalties throughout the entire season.

June 10: Jim Gregory GM of the Year

Winner: Jim Nill, Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars were certainly one of the NHL’s most dangerous teams heading into the 2023-24 season, and that’s because of the way general manager Jim Nill built them up. After all, the Stars had eight players who scored at least 20 goals last season. While many of the team’s veteran forwards put up stellar performances, 2021 first-round selection Wyatt Johnston continued his ascent with a team-high 32 goals.

June 27: Calder Memorial Trophy

Winner: Connor Bedard, C, Blackhawks

After the Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard No. 1 overall last June, it would be surprising if anyone other than Bedard won the award. Bedard scored 61 points (22 goals and 39 assists) to lead all rookies, followed by Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber (47 points) in second place. The Blackhawks star missed some time with a jaw fracture but still proved to be the top rookie in the 2023-24 season.

June 27: Hart Memorial Trophy

Winner: Nathan MacKinnon, C, Avalanche

Nathan MacKinnon was surpassed in the points race by Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov. However, MacKinnon was still able to earn the hardware for the NHL’s MVP. MacKinnon put together a stellar season by recording 140 points (51 goals and 89 assists) during the regular season. The Avalanche star scored career highs in both goals and assists and played like a man possessed throughout the season.

June 27: James Norris Memorial Trophy

Winner: Quinn Hughes, D, Canucks

Quinn Hughes becomes the first player in Canucks history to win the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman. Hughes finished the regular season with a league-high 92 points (17 goals and 75 assists) among defencemen, while also leading the NHL in assists. Hughes now has 204 assists over the past three NHL seasons and joins Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey as the only NHL defencemen to accomplish such a feat.

June 27: Ted Lindsay Award

Winner: Nathan MacKinnon, C, Avalanche

It was a great night for Nathan MacKinnon as he won both the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. The Ted Lindsay Award honors the league’s most outstanding player in a season. MacKinnon was like a freight train running up and down the ice during the 2023-24 campaign and scored a career-best 140 points. He has now scored 100 points in two consecutive seasons for the first time in his NHL career.

June 27: Vezina Trophy

Winner: Connor Hellebuyck, G, Jets

Connor Hellebuyck had arguably his best season as an NHL goaltender during the regular season, and was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender for his efforts. Hellebuyck earned the second-most wins (37) behind Avalanche netminder Alexandar Georgiev, while also posting a 2.39 goals-against-average and a .921 save percentage. The American goaltender also earned five shutouts, and was one of the league’s most dominant goaltenders during the 2023-24 season.
