2024 Tour Championship odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions from golf model that has ruled out 13 majors
With an Olympic gold medal, two Green Jackets and two PGA Tour Player of the Year awards, Scottie Scheffler will look to add another accomplishment to his resume at the 2024 Tour Championship. The event will crown the FedEx Cup champion, with a runner-up finish in 2022 being Scheffler’s best finish to date. He began that year’s Tour Championship as the leader in the standings, and as such held a two-stroke lead before losing to Rory McIlroy by one stroke. Scheffler is hoping to return to the Tour Championship 2024, where he will again start with a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele.
The 2024 Tour Championship begins Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, with the first tee time coming at 11:16 a.m. ET. Scheffler is the +100 favorite, while Schauffele is next at +220. Hideki Matsuyama will start three strokes back and is at +1200 according to Tour Championship 2024 odds, while McIlroy (six strokes back) is at +1800. SportsLine’s proprietary model, created by DFS pro Mike McClure, has become very popular since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, leading tournament after tournament.
The same model has also driven the 13 major tournaments entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters – the third Masters in a row – and this year’s PGA Championship and US Open. Anyone who has followed it has reaped huge benefits.

Top 2024 Tour Championship predictions
The model is calling for a big surprise at the 2024 Tour Championship: McIlroy (+1800), a 26-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, stumbled this week and didn’t even crack the top five. McIlroy had a good late spring/early summer run during seven tournaments. He won two in a row, as well as finishing in the top 5 five times during that span, but his struggles on the PGA Tour have continued since then. He missed the cut at the Open, finished 68th out of 70 golfers at the St. Jude Championship and then tied for 11th at the BMW a week ago. He also had an eleventh-place finish based on 72-hole score at last year’s Tour Championship.
McIlroy starts the 2024 Tour Championship at 4-under-par, so he’ll need to finish six strokes ahead to catch Scheffler. That gap is huge, as McIlroy is just 67th on Tour in total birdies. He’s lost several birdie opportunities because of his putter, as the Irishman is just 65th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting. Given his recent decline, strokes gained and struggles on the greens, McIlroy is one of the bets for the 2024 Tour Championship. Here’s a look at who else could fade.
Another surprise: Viktor Hovland, a +7000 longshot, makes a strong run for the title. The reigning FedEx Cup champion will start eight strokes back at 2-under-par. However, this is a situation the Norwegian is somewhat familiar with as he had to chase down then-leader Scheffler to win the championship last year. Hovland not only won the 2023 Tour Championship by applying starting strokes, but he also had the lowest 72-hole score without applying staggered scoring.
Hovland has finished in the top 15 in all four of his appearances at East Lake, based on his 72-hole score alone, and he finished fourth at the tournament in 2021. Plus, Hovland won the East Lake Cup on this course when he was in college at Oklahoma State, so few can match his success at this venue. He was runner-up in the first FedEx Cup Playoff event two weeks ago, so he clearly turns up his level of play this time of year and could rise up the leaderboard this week. See who else to back here.
How to get selected for the 2024 Tour Championship
The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 35-1 or better who would be strong contenders for the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could win the major. You can see just the model’s picks here.
