2024 WM Phoenix Open: Lucas Glover withdraws after misreading text, misses first tee time at TPC Scottsdale
Lucas Glover made a rookie mistake at the WM Phoenix Open on Thursday, which unfortunately led to the withdrawal of the tournament for someone who has played 520 events on the PGA Tour. Glover misread the text that was sent to players earlier in the week that included his 8:26 a.m. local tee time with Nico Echavarria and Tom Hoge. As a result, he missed his group in Round 1.
“I just misread my text messages [that listed my tee time]Glover told Golf Channel after PGA Tour officials called him moments before teeing off on the first hole in the morning wave at TPC Scottsdale. “I’m kicking myself but also laughing at myself.”
The return to the PGA Tour is his first since 2013. And while it is sad to be forced to withdraw from the tournament, Glover can take solace in the fact that he is already involved in all of the signature events for 2024, including next week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera. country Club. He’s not trying to play his way into those events like many others in the field, including the golfer who replaced him in Phoenix this week – Ryo Hisatsune.
Glover has struggled since winning twice late last summer. He won the Windham Championships and the St. Jude Classic in consecutive weeks, leading to some Ryder Cup talk for the 2009 US Open winner. He ultimately was not selected for the U.S. team, which lost to Europe in Rome, and Glover did not crack the top 10 since the St. Jude victory. In three starts this year, he finished T29 at Sentry, missed the cut at the Sony Open and finished T58 at the Pebble Beach Pro Am last week due to weather constraints.
