2024 WM Phoenix Open: Predictions for TPC Scottsdale, experts’ picks, odds, field rankings, best bets on golf

The biggest party in golf has arrived as the PGA Tour travels to Scottsdale, Arizona for the 2024 WM Phoenix Open. Always a buzz-worthy tournament on the calendar, the WM Phoenix Open will look to follow up last year’s Super Bowl double in the desert this season despite lacking a signature status attached to its name.

The event is no longer a requirement for the game’s top players, but the WM Phoenix Open will once again welcome a strong field to TPC Scottsdale. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be looking to make history in his fifth visit here as the two-time defending champion aims to become the first man since Steve Stricker to make it back-to-back-to-back at the 2009-11 John Deere Classic. Back in the same tournament. Only nine men in PGA Tour history have accomplished such a feat, along with players like Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.

If Scheffler wants to make that history, she’ll have to defeat several of her U.S. Ryder Cup teammates in the process. Scottsdale resident Max Homa is in the spotlight among the local crowd and will be eyeing continued success just down the street from his home.

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth are among the players who have been in good form but don’t have any hardware to show for it. Both of these Americans have been unable to enter the winner’s circle for some time now, but given the quality of play recently, one would doubt that this drought will turn into a flood in the near future.

Sam Burns continues to shine in the early stages of 2024. Overcoming the disappointment of losing The American Express, Burns scored a top-10 finish at last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Monterey Peninsula champ, Windham Clark, is eyeing his fourth win since the spring and should be more comfortable in his backyard of Scottsdale.

Scotty Scheffler (9/2)
Justin Thomas (10-1): Two major factors are converging from Thomas: course history and current form. The 15-time PGA Tour winner is one of the most successful players at TPC Scottsdale with six consecutive top-20 finishes, three of which doubled as top-five efforts. He arrived in Scottsdale this year riding the wave of an emerging form. Thomas has finished in the top six five times in a row since the fall, including last week at Pebble Beach. His iron game is back, and if the putter holds up for 72 holes, he’ll be in good position for his first win since the 2022 PGA Championship.
Max Homa (16-1): Scottsdale is in the midst of a busy season of transplant sports; This will be the third of four consecutive weeks on the golf course. Homa’s 10-tournament, top-12 streak was snapped by a poor T66 effort at Pebble Beach, but his hometown should be ready for his comeback. The six-time PGA Tour winner has never missed the cut at the WM Phoenix Open with finishes of T14 in 2022 and T6 in 2020. The putter has been uncharacteristically good in the early parts of 2024, but that club should recover sooner rather than later.
Sam Burns (20-1): A breakout appears to be boiling to the surface. The five-time PGA Tour winner has enjoyed a strong start to his 2024 season with a close call at The American Express and a quiet top-10 finish at last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Always reliable on the putting surface, Burns has found a new gear with his superb game, and this should allow him to consistently fight for the lead. The world number 20 had finished T6 in last year’s tournament.
Jordan Spieth (20-1): The 2021 WM Phoenix Open marked the beginning of Spieth’s return to relevance. His Saturday 61 was one of the most memorable rounds in recent years, and he has since continued his love affair with TPC Scottsdale. Finishing T6 in last year’s tournament, Spieth finished third from tee to green and second on approach. His iron game continues to look sharp and will help him achieve similar results this year too. However, if Spieth is to cross the finish line for the first time since the 2022 RBC Heritage, he will need to drive the blade more effectively and do without small misses on the greens.
