Gunther cut his teeth in the German independent season in the years prior to his tenure in WWE. Gunther returns to Berlin – which is a seven-hour drive from his birthplace in Vienna, Austria – to defend his newly acquired World Heavyweight Championship. Gunther will take on King of the Ring finalist Randy Orton, who is trying to win his 15th world title.
Take a look below at the matches confirmed for the Bash in Berlin and see what could happen. The event will stream live on Peacock and the main card will begin at 1pm ET.
2024 WWE Bash in Berlin Match
World Heavyweight Championship – Gunther (c) vs. Randy Orton: Gunther defeated Orton in the King of the Ring finals in May to earn a world title opportunity at SummerSlam. Gunther made the most of his opportunities but there is a small dark cloud hanging over his young title reign. Gunther’s shoulder was off the mat when he pinned Orton to become King of the Ring. Orton challenged Gunther for the world title which would solidify Gunther’s success against Orton or prove the odds right for “The Viper.”
Undisputed WWE Championship – Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens: Rhodes offered Owen a title shot against The Bloodline in gratitude for Owen’s support. Owen declined, arguing that his recent win-loss record did not justify the opportunity. Rhodes made a request to SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, who booked the match for Berlin.
Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley vs. Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan (Mixed Tag Team Match): Priest and Ripley have been on the warpath ever since the two were violently ejected from Judgment Day. Priest’s big problem is with Finn Balor, but he’s happy to try his hand at Mysterio as well. After Mysterio left Ripley for Morgan, Ripley’s issues with the Women’s World Champion reached a whole new level. Morgan has done everything possible to prevent Ripley from seeking any kind of physical revenge, but now they will have to share the ring for the first time since Mysterio helped Morgan get the win in their SummerSlam match.
CM Punk vs Drew McIntyre (Strap Match): McIntyre defeated Punk in their long-awaited match at SummerSlam, thanks to guest referee Seth Rollins and McIntyre’s stolen bracelet. If there was any major criticism of that match, it was that the match lacked “hate” in favor of the drama of a friendship bracelet stolen by Punk’s wife. When Punk took a follow-up beating with the belt, he was inspired to challenge McIntyre to a strap match, which should provide the level of violence fans are used to from the first match.
2024 WWE Bash in Berlin predictions
United States Championship – LA Knight (captain) vs. Santos Escobar: Escobar defeated Andrade on the August 9 episode of SmackDown with help from Carmelo Hayes to become the No. 1 contender. The match has not been formally announced, but will likely take place at Bash in Berlin or the night before on the go-home episode of SmackDown. Knight’s popularity could allow WWE to push the US title. Putting the match on PPV would help achieve that goal.
Intercontinental Championship – Braun Breaker (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Ludwig Kaiser: Kaiser and Gunther spent years developing the German independent wrestling scene. Booking Kaiser on WWE’s first PPV in Germany only makes sense. Booking Kaiser in an Intercontinental title match against Breaker and Sheamus accomplishes several goals. Kaiser gets his first singles title shot on home soil, Sheamus continues his quest for the one title that has eluded him, and Breaker books his first title match. If nothing else, it’s a killer match.
The Bloodline (Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu or Tonga Loa) vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) or Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford): #DIY and Street Profits qualified for the title eliminator by defeating Pretty Deadly and A-Town Down Under, respectively. Whichever team emerges victorious will likely become The Bloodline’s first title challengers. Tonga and Fatu defeated #DIY to become champions the night before SummerSlam. With Fatu’s injury status unknown after SummerSlam, WWE could invoke the Freebird Rule. The rule — named after the Fabulous Freebirds — allows two stable members to defend the tag team titles on a rotation basis. If Fatu is not medically cleared, Loa could potentially take his place.
