49ers rookie Ricky Piersall shot after attempted robbery in San Francisco, in serious but stable condition

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Piersall, 23, was shot during an attempted robbery in the Union Square neighborhood, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced Saturday. The 49ers released a statement saying Piersall was shot in the chest and is in serious but stable condition.

Initial investigation findings indicate that a man attempted to rob Pearsall. During this attempted robbery, a physical altercation occurred in which both parties were injured. According to the San Francisco Police Department, the suspect has been taken into custody, and both men have been taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

Pearsall’s mother, Erin, provided an update on his condition.

“He was shot in the chest and it came out his back,” he wrote on social media, via David Lombardi of TheAthletic.com. “Thank God the bullet didn’t hit his vital organs. He’s in good spirits right now.”

Police told Fox40 that Pearsall was shot when the suspect tried to steal his Rolex watch. The 49ers wideout was on his way to a signing event at the time. There was a struggle for the gun and both Pearsall and the suspect were shot.

Police have identified a 17-year-old boy as a suspect in the Pearsall shooting.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the suspect attempted to rob Pearsall at gunpoint, leading to a struggle, multiple shots fired, and both Pearsall and the suspect suffering gunshot wounds from the suspect’s gun.

Police arrested the suspect as he tried to flee. He has been identified as a 17-year-old boy who lives in Tracy, California. His name has not yet been released and the District Attorney’s Office has said he will be charged in juvenile court.

Scott said police recovered the gun and, as far as they know, the suspect was acting alone and did not specifically target Piersall because he is a 49ers player.

The former Florida Gators pass catcher was selected this offseason with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He caught 65 passes for 965 yards and four touchdowns for the Gators last season.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Piersall recently returned to 49ers practice after missing the past three weeks with a left shoulder injury.
