Angelina Jolie pays tribute to opera singer Maria Callas by wearing her original Cartier jewellery at Venice Film Festival

Angelina Jolie is praising this opera icon.

The 49-year-old “Maleficent” star attended the 2024 Venice Film Festival on Thursday in a stunning black dress ahead of the premiere of her new film “Maria,” and she honored the memory of legendary opera singer Maria Callas — whom she plays in the biopic — by wearing one of the late star’s Cartier brooches.

Jolie told Vogue that though she’s not totally into Method dressing, she wanted to pay homage to Callas with her outfit at the festival, wearing an Atelier Jolie gown with a gold Cartier panther brooch “sitting on top of a carved white chalcedony gemstone.”

“I decided not to copy [Maria’s] “I love her looks because they’re hers and her Venetian carpets were so beautiful, so I gave a little nod to that—in a different way,” she told Vogue. She added, “You can imagine how special it was to wear jewellery made by her.”

Jolie also wears a 1971 Cartier brooch in the film, as well as several other vintage pieces of jewelry belonging to the soprano.

While she may not have followed the path of Margot Robbie or Zendaya in Venice, the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” star said she “made sure to wear something ladylike” to “honor” Callas.

And when it came time for the premiere on Thursday night, she stunned in a champagne-colored gown and matching fur stole, pinning on one of those Cartier brooches she described in her Vogue interview.

Jolie described the artwork in her interview — a “rose brooch set with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies” with moving petals — and told the magazine that she was “mesmerized by how it transformed from a closed flower to a bloom.”

He said, “I think this would have brought a smile to his face. There is a little secret hidden in this picture.”

The humanitarian paid homage to the opera star by wearing a brown Saint Laurent design earlier in the day, wearing a Greek-style Saint Laurent gown that was reminiscent of Callas’ stage costumes with its draped style.
