Armie Hammer forced to sell truck because he ‘can’t afford gas’ after career-ending cannibalism scandal
Armie Hammer has moved back to Los Angeles, but he’s had to sell his beloved truck because fuel prices are so high there.
In a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, August 27, the Disgraced actor, 37, revealed that he got a new apartment in L.A. and took the truck he loves “so much” on one last road trip — to CarMax.
“I’ve been back in L.A. for the last couple of weeks. This is my truck. I bought it as a Christmas gift to myself in 2017, because I’ve owned pickup trucks for a long time, and I love this truck,” he said of the black pickup, which he showed parked in a CarMax parking lot.
He clarified, “This is not an ad for CarMax. This is because I’m selling my truck.”
He said, “I’ve put about four or five hundred dollars worth of fuel into it since I got back to L.A., and I can’t afford it. I can’t buy fuel anymore.”
Hammer’s career ended almost overnight after allegations of rape, physical abuse and cannibal fantasies surfaced in 2021. He has since spoken out, saying he is “grateful” the scandal didn’t “end” his career.
The actor said the truck holds sentimental value to him as he has “taken this truck camping and across the country and on long road trips so many times”, revealing that he brought his children home from the hospital in this truck after they were born.
“But you know what? It doesn’t matter,” he said. “It doesn’t matter. I got a new car. It’s small. It’s a hybrid. I’ll probably put about $10 a month in gas in it and that’s it.”
He added, “So I have to clean up all this stuff, you know, all kinds of mess. But it’s okay.”
When Hammer turned his camera around inside the truck and showed all of his belongings that he had to remove from the vehicle, one thing that was clearly visible was a large bundle of rope, which was attention-grabbing considering his alleged love for engaging in BDSM and specifically Shibari – Japanese rope bondage.
The “Death on the Nile” actor said his decision to sell his car was tied to his 38th birthday tomorrow, August 28, and the start of a new chapter in his life.
“I will be celebrating my birthday in Los Angeles with a new car, a new apartment and a new life,” he said in the video.
Hammer also revealed that his kids are “not happy” about selling the four-door pickup because they have so many memories of their time spent in the truck.
But he’s trying to focus on two things: “Parking will get easier, and gas will get cheaper.”
Hammer has spoken openly about his financial troubles after facing sexual misconduct allegations.
In 2021, photos emerged showing Hammer hard at work at a new job: selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands.
“I love it,” the Hammer family scion said in an interview on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast in July. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Describing seeing photos of Hammer selling timeshares, Maher said he thought, “Damn, this guy has guts.” Hammer replied, “That’s the wrong tone — it’s ‘Bill.’ I have two kids.”
Hammer and his ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers divorced in June 2023. The couple shares children: Harper, 9, and Ford, 7.
According to their divorce agreement, Hammer agreed to pay Chambers $1,500 a month in child support. The amount was set because he “does not have the income” to pay more. The couple also agreed to forgo spousal support.
