‘Austin Powers’ star won’t speak to ‘estranged’ parents as he warns Hollywood is ‘evil’
“Austin Powers” star Heather Graham hasn’t spoken to her parents in nearly 30 years.
Graham recalled that she left home at the age of 18 and moved to West Hollywood, California, to pursue her dream of being part of the entertainment industry.
At the time, her father warned her that Hollywood “will claim [her] Soul.”
“He would tell me on a regular basis that the entertainment industry was evil and that Hollywood would claim my soul,” Graham said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
She explained that her parents “were part of a generation that didn’t believe in therapy or discussing personal things, so I never felt I could talk to them.”
After the premiere of her film “License to Drive” in 1988, Graham knew it was time to leave her parents’ house.
She said, “When the film released, I was 18 years old, it became difficult to stay at home.”
“I told myself, ‘I have to get out of here, I have to be successful, and I have to be a movie star.’”
Graham added, “I found an apartment in West Hollywood with another girl from high school — a working model who was also investing in real estate. Living with her was liberating.”
When Graham was 9, her family moved from Virginia to Agoura Hills, California. At the time, the actress felt she went from being “popular” on the East Coast to “not fitting in” on the West Coast.
“In Virginia, I lived like a tomboy and loved walking in the woods. When we moved, I became isolated. I had to drive everywhere. Without kids to play with on the street, I had fewer social interactions and felt unsafe. I turned to books and read books above my level,” she told the outlet.
Graham graduated from high school with a 5.0 GPA and went on to study English at UCLA.
After his junior year at the prestigious University of Southern California, he decided to drop out to focus on his acting career.
At this time, Graham landed leading roles in the films “Austin Powers” and “Swingers,” which made her realize she was “self-reliant” and she began to reevaluate her relationship with her parents.
“I stopped talking to my parents when I was 25, and now I’m estranged from them,” Graham admitted.
“My friends are proud of me and I’m proud of myself. I have great friends.”
The 54-year-old actress is proud of the life she has built.
“I live in a house in Los Angeles that I bought last year. I also have a loft in New York,” she said, noting that her West Coast home “overlooks the Pacific Ocean.”
“I love the sea,” she said.
“I also love sitting outside while writing or preparing for a film. Nature is inspiring.”
Graham takes on multiple roles for her new film, “Chosen Family.”
The actress has written, directed and starred in the film, which will release in October.
She stars opposite Nicolas Cage in her next project, “The Gunslingers,” which is set to be released in 2025.
