Barack Obama backs Kamala Harris’ tan suit, says: ‘It still looks good 10 years later!’
Barack Obama knows a good brown suit when he sees it.
And just a decade after his own beige workwear sparked controversy online, the former president responded after Vice President Kamala Harris chose a similar style for last week’s Democratic National Convention.
“How it started. How it’s going,” Obama wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, also sharing a side-by-side photo of the two politicians wearing tan suits.
“Even after 10 years it still looks good!”
In 2014, the “Promised Land” author wore his infamous light brown suit during a live White House press briefing about the ISIS situation in Syria.
Obama’s critics at the time argued that his outfit choice lacked “seriousness.”
And some might say it was a bold move for Harris, as the 59-year-old steered away from the traditional black and navy suit during her Aug. 19 appearance at the D.N.C.
Before accepting the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, Harris wore a tan Chloé blazer and matching trousers.
After Obama approved of the look, her followers shared their thoughts, too.
“You both look fresh with classy swag and confidence,” one wrote on Instagram, where Obama shared the same message and photos of both looks. “These two should be in the history books.”
“We love to see it,” another said, in an “iconic” reference.
Along with alluding to Obama’s viral suit — intentionally or otherwise — Harris’ look also referenced his viral “coconut tree” speech, which recently became a popular meme.
On Chloé’s official website, a similar jacket in “Coconut Brown” color costs $3,390.
Harris mentioned the fruit in a May 2023 speech, which recently resurfaced and went viral online.
Harris said at the time, “My mother would sometimes tease us and say, ‘I don’t know what’s happened to you young people. Do you think you fell out of a coconut tree?'”
A number of celebrities were spotted at the D.N.C. last week — including Oprah Winfrey, who opted for a mix of colors with her purple Christian Siriano suit on Aug. 21.
