Ben Affleck’s best friend Matt Damon attends TIFF premiere with Jennifer Lopez despite his friend’s divorce
Jennifer Lopez won’t be coming face-to-face with her estranged husband Ben Affleck at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival — but she will be meeting his best friend Matt Damon.
The group’s upcoming sports drama, “Unstoppable,” is set to premiere at the festival next month, and sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Friday that Damon, 53, will be in attendance.
The film was produced by Affleck, 52, and Damon’s production company, Artists Equity.
Meanwhile, Lopez has a supporting role in the film based on the true story of wrestler Anthony Robles.
Lopez plays Robles’ mother in the drama, which also stars Jharrel Jerome, Michael Pena and Don Cheadle.
Earlier this week, Page Six revealed that Affleck would not be attending the film’s big premiere in Canada due to his divorce from Lopez, while Lopez still plans to walk the red carpet.
Though the “Hustlers” actress was cast months before the pair split, director William Goldenberg recently claimed his choice had nothing to do with their marriage.
“She was someone who had lived her life, and I felt Jennifer was one of the few actresses who could have played the role,” he told Vanity Fair.
“I think she was the right one for it, and it was also a coincidence that she ended up marrying the person we always wanted her to be.”
It’s unclear what impact the couple’s divorce will have on the press tour, as Lopez has previously made it clear she’s not interested in discussing the state of her marriage on the red carpet.
However, now the former lovers have something to think about, as this isn’t the only project they’re working on.
The “Jenny From the Block” singer also starred in Affleck and Damon’s project “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
The film, based on the 1993 Broadway musical, recently wrapped shooting. Lopez produced the film along with her “Good Will Hunting” co-stars.
Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on Tuesday — which happened to be the second anniversary of their lavish wedding in Georgia.
However, they did reveal the official separation date as April 26, 2024 — which was just a week before breakup rumors began circulating.
Despite this, insiders recently told us that the couple began having problems during their Lake Como honeymoon in early August 2022.
A source familiar with the situation told Page Six that Affleck was “unhappy about the paparazzi following him.”
“He’s an international superstar and he behaved as if it was a surprise to him that people would follow him,” he said.
Although it was “supposed to be the happiest time of their lives,” we’re told reality soon hit the two.
The pair reportedly did not sign a pre-nup agreement and have applied to have the “Argo” actor’s last name removed.
