There’s a lot we have to cover today, but before we get to all of that, today is the 30th anniversary of June 17, 1994, one of the strangest and most surreal days in sports ever. If the mere mention of this date means anything to you, you probably remember where you were when O.J. Simpson’s white Bronco was racing down the streets and highways of Los Angeles. If this day means nothing to you, talk to an older relative or friend — Or you can check out our review to see what made the day special.
Good morning everyone, but especially…
US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau
final round on sunday US Open There was a little bit of everything. The day’s early leader stumbled. The challenger came forward. The heartbreaking fall. And lump-in-the-throat bunker shot on the last hole that will ultimately help Bryson DeChambeau The major championship agony continued with a win at Pinehurst No. 2 rory mcilroy,
The final round of the tournament — the 1,000th event held by the USGA — seemed almost scripted at times as DeChambeau began the day with a three-shot lead, but that lead disappeared and then re-emerged after the Dallas resident missed a short putt. DeChambeau celebrated his double-barrel, fist-pumping glory as best he could. Golf writer Chip Patterson explains what happened DeChambeau’s second major win (2020 US Open) could mean for the game:
- Patterson: “Often the idea of DeChambeau as a YouTube star confuses an older generation of golf fans, who are neither the ones who consume his content nor the target audience for it. However, what you saw among the more than 100,000 fans in attendance at Pinehurst No. 2 this week was that very target audience — a younger, more online, social media-savvy fan base that followed their favorite golfer through 72 tough holes … DeChambeau enjoyed hearing the catch phrases shouted by fans on his YouTube channel, and also had the opportunity to see their favorite influencer in person.”

And not so good morning…
US Open runner-up Rory McIlroy
Generally speaking, in a sport like golf, finishing second in a major tournament is not a reason to be disappointed. (After all, you did it, Win a $2.3 million prize (for weekend work) But…if you rory mcilroy And you’ve been looking to get back on top of a major championship for literally 10 years, have a two-stroke lead with five holes remaining, miss two putts inside four feet and bogey three of the last four holes to lose by one stroke, then today could be one of those Mondays when you don’t want to get out of bed.
Of the holes 15 through 18 he played in the event, McIlroy only bogeyed three of them over the first three days, and didn’t even throw square on the scorecard on two consecutive holes during the event until 16 and 17 on Sunday afternoon. In fact, he also birdied 15 and 18 in Round 1, so this is going to sting for a while. For a great article about McIlroy’s downfall, check out Kyle Porter’s detailed How did this 35-year-old player get here – And how they left Pinehurst No. 2,
- Porter: “McIlroy walked down the stairs and into the scoring room looking more dejected than ever… Before DeChambeau finished signing his card as the 124th U.S. Open champion, McIlroy found his rental car, and he was fleeing the crime scene he had created… Without talking to those close to him, McIlroy started his Lexus car, threw up some gravel upon his exit was in the air before DeChambeau finished speaking to the media. All things considered, it was his worst and weakest drive of the week.”

🏀 Fever overtakes Skye over another physical meeting of Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese
The next chapter of Ongoing The Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Show continued on sunday Fever to defeat the Sky 91-83 at home. Both players had noteworthy stats, as Clark easily had his best game of the season, scoring 23 points on 7-11 shooting, eight rebounds and nine assists. Meanwhile, Reese had another double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds), but spent most of the afternoon in foul trouble.
However, the most talked about moment of the game was when Reese held Clark’s head with his arm when he attempted to block Clark’s layup. It was seen as a true basketball play And Correctly assessed as a Flagrant 1 foul No Contact with a player’s head it was He obvious Officials are being called to review this.
of Chicago Camila Cardoso had a strong performance earning his first double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds), and led Indiana to a 3–1 win over the Atlanta Braves. Aliyah Boston She was also extremely efficient with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and five blocks. WNBA writer Jack Maloney noted that Boston and Clarke looked more comfortable than ever as the Fever won back-to-back games for the first time.
- Maloney: “It was notable that six of her nine shots on Sunday came off feeds from Clark and on a variety of plays. She worked the pick-and-roll, but she also worked on some timely cuts and some transition opportunities. The chemistry between the two No. 1 overall picks is growing, and that’s great news for the Fever.”
⚾ Mariners are moving up in the MLB Power Rankings
Yankees (50-24) may not have moved up in our rankings, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need to look back. Believe it or not, The Mariners (43-31) are playing like they could ruin someone’s party in October. They were 10th two weeks ago, 8th last week and now they’re 7th in Matt Schneider’s latest MLB Power Rankings.
- Snyder: “I’m sure someone somewhere is yelling “SHAKED!!” about their 17-7 record in one-run games, but they have built a big cushion in the AL West and those games played are already in the bank. Even if the Mariners only played .500 ball the rest of the way, they will finish 87-75 and at this rate they will likely take the division. That would certainly make the playoffs. As we have seen many times in recent years, just making the playoffs is enough to consider a team a threat to win the World Series. The playoff rotation would certainly be quite strong.”
Matt said luis castillo, George Kirby And logan gilbert There’s the “three-headed monster” that could certainly make the playoffs interesting in Seattle. Meanwhile, Here are Matt’s top five,
- Yankees (Previous: 1)
- Orioles (prev: 3)
- Phillies (Prev: 2)
- Dodgers (prev: 4)
- Patron (previous: 5)
Wonder where the Mariners land next week.
