Christian Scott injury update: Mets rookie pitcher to have elbow surgery months after landing on IL
New York Mets right-hander Christian Scott will undergo elbow surgery next week to replace his ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John ligament) and wear an internal brace, agent Nate Heisler announced Wednesday. While every player and every rehab stint is different, the injury could rule Scott out until the 2025 season.
Scott, 25, has been out since July 21. In nine big league outings this season, he compiled a 4.56 ERA (86 ERA+) and a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio. When the Mets placed Scott on the injured list on July 23, they reported the injury as a UCL strain.
“It’s too early to say,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said at the time about the possibility of Scott undergoing surgery. “I’m not going to sit here and speculate until we have all the facts and information. We’ve got to wait until the doctors and the MRIs and everything else comes in, and then we’ll make a decision.”
Scott’s elbow had been troubling him since last season, forcing him to miss more than the final two weeks of the campaign.
In addition to Scott, Mets teammates Kodai Senga and Paul Blackburn are also not in the squad, the latter of whom was recently sidelined after suffering a spinal fluid leak in his back.
The Mets enter Wednesday with an 83-68 record on the season, leaving them tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League’s second wild-card spot. Additionally, the Mets are two games ahead of the first team outside the playoff bracket, the Atlanta Braves. The Mets and Braves are scheduled to play three games in Atlanta next week, a series that will determine the season series/tiebreaker and could ultimately decide which club claims a playoff berth at the end of the year.
