Colorado football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, schedule, Deion Sanders depth chart by top CU insiders

After another offseason full of national attention, the Colorado Buffaloes will begin their second season under head coach Deion Sanders in one week. The Buffs underwent another massive roster overhaul after finishing with a 4-8 overall record in 2023. The Colorado football roster will once again feature All-American candidates Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, but coach Prime and his staff added 55 new scholarship players to the Colorado football roster during the offseason. Over 40 players on the team’s 2023 roster transferred to new schools following the season.

With so many new faces at the Champions Center in Boulder, the Buffs will have a very different look in 2024. Several position battles are still undecided, and Colorado football’s depth chart likely won’t be locked in until the team’s season opener against North Dakota State. Colorado Buffaloes’ top practice stories

The No. 1 priority for coach Prime and his staff this offseason was getting better on the offensive line, but right behind that was upgrading the skill position talent around Shedeur Sanders. The Buffs added four wide receivers and four-star high school recruit Draylon Miller from the transfer portal. They also revamped their running back room by adding transfers Dallon Hayden (Ohio State) and Isaiah Augustev (Arkansas) and true freshman signees Micah Welch and Brandon Hood.

One player who stands out in fall camp is wide receiver Will Shepard, who transferred to Colorado after spending four years at Vanderbilt. During his tenure with the Commodores, Shepard caught 152 passes for 2,067 yards and 21 touchdowns. Now he has an opportunity to become the No. 1 wide receiver in Colorado’s explosive offense and have a career year in 2024. “I’m here to get everybody’s attention and show the world what I can do,” Shepard told Buffstamped. “To get an opportunity to play on a big stage and play on a big stage.” Get more updates on how the Colorado offensive line depth chart is shaping up on Buffstamped.

Another priority for the Buffs this offseason was improving the team’s defensive line. Colorado struggled to get a consistent pass rush and stick against the run up front in 2023, so coach Prime changed his staff and personnel to address that issue. CU added four-star high school recruit Brandon Davis-Swain and coveted transfers Dayon Hayes (Pitt), B.J. Green (Arizona State), Quincey Wiggins (LSU), and Samuel Okunola (Pitt), but the most impressive new member of the Buffs’ defensive line room might eventually be Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp.

Sapp is listed as the senior quality control coach for the defense, assisting defensive line coach Damion Lewis and outside linebackers coach Vincent Dancy. “We’re developing some depth right now. We have five ends that will run. I tell them, ‘We have five ends on a two-lane highway, so you all better fight for those reps.’ Because they’re going to move fast. We’re just building depth. We want guys to be good and solid because the one thing I saw before I turned off the TV last year was that we couldn’t stop the run and that won’t happen to me. No. We’re going to earn our rights by stopping the run,” Sapp told BuffStampede. Get the latest updates on the Colorado defensive line depth chart on BuffStampede.
