Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is nothing new to being at the center of controversy, and he was at the center of it again following his team’s win over Colorado State on Saturday night. Sanders refused to shake Rams quarterback Braden Fowler-Nicolosi’s hand in a clip that went viral.

With the Buffaloes winning 28-9 over the Rams, Sanders passed Fowler-Nicolosi at midfield. The Colorado quarterback pointed to his Colorado State counterpart before shaking hands with the other players.

On his “2Legendary” podcast, Sanders explained that his rejection was a response to Fowler-Nicolosi’s trash talk. Sanders said he felt disrespected and didn’t want to make it seem like everything was okay between the two.

“After the game, I said something to the Colorado State quarterback because he was saying crazy things on social media, and he was really doing it for clicks,” Sanders said. “… Yeah, I said something because I’m human. You’re not going to keep saying crazy things about us and keep saying crazy things like that, and you don’t like it at all the time.”

After the incident, Sanders said he felt like the media made him out to be the bad guy without giving the full context.

“I personally felt a lot of hate, but obviously the media tried to make it look like I did something wrong,” Sanders said. “That’s just the way it is. We understood what was happening, so we’re not affected by it anymore.”

Before the in-state rivalry game, Fowler-Nicolosi described Colorado as being more concerned with social media than football.

“We’ll see how far the Instagram followers take them,” Fowler-Nicolosi said.

Sanders, who threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns, had the final success, as Fowler Nicolosi threw for only 209 total yards and two interceptions.
