MERYL Streep and Martin Short insist they’re just friends – but that’s doing nothing to quiet the buzz, and fuel hopes that the stars could become Hollywood’s latest couple.

The “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars went viral (again) last week when a video captured them holding hands at their show’s premiere party at the Paramount lot in Hollywood.

Spice told us their “close friendship” was evident even within the party.

Streep and Short’s characters are the show’s stars. However, their chemistry behind the camera led one insider at the party to believe, “This has to be more than ‘Showmen’. There’s definitely something to it.”

Either way, they weren’t stuck at the hip all night!

We’re told Short was “watching carefully” while they were together. The source added, “They were walking holding hands and were really happy, laughing. It was very sweet and adorable.”

But both of them left the party in different ways.

“They are just friends,” a rep for Streep told us.

Short’s rep did not hear back from us — but in January, he described their relationship as “very good friends, nothing more” when speaking to People.

On Monday, Short spoke to “Extra’s” Mona Kosar Abdi about her “love” for Streep when asked about their off-screen friendship.

“I think it’s a friendship that always grows if you work with someone and love them,” Short said.

Meanwhile, it’s clear that the show’s star Selena Gomez and her boyfriend Benny Blanco are with each other.

The couple met courtside at a private table with her sister, where singer Chappel Roan came to greet the trio and “Selena and Benny were spotted hugging,” our insider revealed.

Steve Martin, Jane Lynch and Zach Galifianaki were also on hand to celebrate the hit Hulu series, which returns with its fourth season on Hulu on Tuesday.
