Fatman Scoop’s family and Missy Elliott mourn ‘Legendary’ rapper’s death: ‘He was the laugh of our lives’
Fatman Scoop’s loved ones, including Missy Elliott, are paying tribute to the late rapper, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, through emotional comments released via social media following his sudden death on Friday.
“Prayers go out to the Fatman Scoop family during this difficult time,” Elliott, who worked with Scoop on his hit 2005 single “Lose Control,” wrote via X Saturday.
“Fatman Scoop’s voice and energy contributed to many songs that made people feel happy and dance for more than two decades,” the 53-year-old Grammy winner said alongside a photo of her late friend wearing an all-white outfit.
He concluded his post by telling Scoop, “Your impact is huge and will never be forgotten..🕊️🙏🏾”
In addition to Elliott, Scoop also collaborated with Mariah Carey on her song “It’s Like That”.
However, the “We Belong Together” singer, who recently lost her mother and sister on the same day, has yet to release a public statement on the rapper’s death.
Meanwhile, the Freeman family shared a post on Scoop’s Instagram on Saturday, confirming with “deep sadness and a very heavy heart” that the “great and iconic” man had died.
They also confirmed that the New York-born hype-man, who they remember as a “bright spirit” and “a ray of light” on stage, died after he collapsed during his show in Hamden, Connecticut, on Friday night.
“FatmanScoop was not only a world-class artist, he was also a father, brother, uncle, and friend,” the family said in a joint statement.
“He was a constant source of laughter, support, unwavering strength and courage in our lives.”
The Freeman family then listed Scoop’s many accomplishments and said he was “known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club.”
The statement also said, “His music inspired us to dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was contagious and the generosity he showed to all will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”
The family concluded by saying they would “like to celebrate his remarkable life and the countless lives he touched,” adding that the late rap star’s legacy will always be filled with “love and brightness.”
Scoop’s tour manager, Birch Michael, was the first to announce to the world that “Be Faithful” had died.
“You taught me how to become the man I am today,” the producer said in a Facebook post Saturday.
“I love you Scoop, thank you so much for everything you gave me. Rest in peace x.”
According to online video, Scoop was performing at the Hamden Arts Commission Free Summer Concert Series on Friday night when he suddenly felt unwell and walked toward the DJ booth.
Shortly after, he collapsed and medical personnel were seen helping the rapper backstage while a man on a mic said, “The big man needs to rest … he has no fans on this stage.”
Another clip posted on Facebook on Friday showed fans praying while paramedics performed chest compressions and CPR.
Scoop was then escorted out of the premises and taken to a local hospital for further treatment.
The official cause of his death has not yet been revealed. He was 53.
