The 2024 college football season kicks off in a big way with top-10 teams facing off in the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, with No. 10 Florida State taking on Georgia Tech. The conference showdown also marks the start of an unprecedented year of ACC football, as the league expanded to 17 full-time members with the additions of Cal, Stanford and SMU over the summer.
So, in this year of change, it’s fitting that the defending ACC champions take on the most unique setting possible in search of another conference crown. Ireland has hosted games at Aviva Stadium, home to the Ireland national teams in both rugby and soccer, in each of the past two seasons, and future dates are scheduled for 2025 and 2027. It’s a unique experience for players, coaches and fans, but has come with some cost in terms of an accelerated fall camp schedule to accommodate travel.
While the pomp and circumstance of college football overseas makes for quite the spectacle, at the center of this matchup are two teams hoping to build on last season’s success. Florida State has its eyes on another ACC title and with it a berth in the College Football Playoff after being overlooked last year. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech has a ton to bounce back from a team that finished fourth in the ACC standings and reached a bowl game for the first time since 2018. Any of their goals are still attainable with a win on Saturday, which brings midseason urgency to this early-season contest.

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech: Things to know
DJ Uiagalelei returns to the ACC, debuts at Florida State: Another year brings another wave of new faces for Florida State as Mike Norvell once again uses the transfer portal for immediate-impact additions. There are familiar names in the group of freshmen — including several players from last year’s SEC championship team at Alabama — but no player is going to draw attention like quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. One of the Seminoles’ biggest rivals from his time at Clemson, Uiagalelei is coming off a one-year stint at Oregon State that included career highs in yards per game (219.8) and yards per attempt (8.4), as well as the best passer rating since becoming a full-time starter. The offense has a good core, thanks to an experienced offensive line and some strong talent at running back.
Georgia Tech expected to play better defense: Brent Key’s breakthrough season with the Yellow Jackets was powered by an offense that led the ACC in rushing and finished third in the conference in total offense (and in the top 30 nationally), averaging 424.6 yards per game and 6.34 yards per carry. That group brings back its starting quarterback, Haynes King, its leading rusher, Jamal Haynes, four of its five starters along the offensive line and three of its top four receivers. The biggest question mark for the Yellow Jackets in 2024 is the defensive side of the ball, which went through a leadership change after finishing last in the ACC in total defense. Fixing that side of the ball is the challenge for new defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci, who comes after a successful defensive coordinator stint under Mike Elko at Duke. If Georgia Tech is going to overcome overseas upheaval, it will need its defense to show more than a couple of leaps in its performance.
Stiff competition from international travelNotre Dame’s 42-3 win against Navy in the Aer Lingus Classic last year broke the streak of one-score games in college football played in Ireland. The last three times an early-season game has been hosted in Ireland, it has produced a thrilling finish, with Northwestern coming back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Nebraska 31-28 in 2022, Georgia Tech beating Boston College 17-14 with two fourth-quarter scores and Penn State winning with a walk-off field goal against UCF in 2014, the first win of the James Franklin era.
Florida State vs. Georgia Tech prediction, picks
I see this as a matchup-based game where the strengths and weaknesses of both teams could lead to some standouts. New Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci was part of a Duke defense that did a great job of limiting scoring the last two years, and I think he’ll have some schematic things in place to make life difficult for DJU. This will cause Florida State to respond by leaning on the run game, which I think will be their strength and move the clock as opposed to a pass-happy attack. On the other side of the ball, I think Georgia Tech’s offense will have its hands full with one of the best pass rush duos in the country with Florida State’s Pat Payton and Marvin Jones Jr. Choose: Under 55.5
