Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III fight results, highlights: ‘Money’ shows off his skills in exhibition
Legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced John Gotti III in an exhibition match in Mexico City on Saturday night. The fight went exactly as many expected, and as was typical of first meetings, with the legendary boxer getting the better of the fight. Thankfully, the contest did not end in a brawl as it did when they met in June 2023. Despite Mayweather clearly dominating the action, no winner was declared due to the fight being an exhibition.
Mayweather was careful not to give Gotti a chance to do effective work, instead emphasizing his jab and then controlling the action with straight right hands. As the rounds progressed, Gotti was clearly frustrated by Mayweather’s standard economical and effective approach to the “sweet science.”
Since the fight was an exhibition bout, consisting of eight, two-minute rounds, there was no chance of any notable results. This has been the standard approach for exhibition bouts since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Mayweather only able to show his best in bouts with Japanese kickboxers, whose results are announced at the end.
Much like his exhibition bouts with the likes of Logan Paul, Mayweather seemed content to continue fighting for the time scheduled for the bout even though he was clearly the better of the two men in the ring. At the conclusion of the eighth round, no winner was declared.
After the fight, Mayweather and Gotti embraced each other in a hug, a departure from the altercation that took place after their first bout.
Mayweather had several notable bouts with Mexican superstars during his illustrious professional career. After holding the exhibition on hostile soil, Mayweather was grateful to the audience.
“Mexico City,” Mayweather said. “Thanks for coming.”
