How Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy finally resolved their ‘Pretty in Pink’ feud after 25 years
Leave it to “The View” to bring two former feuding co-stars back together.
Jon Cryer appeared on the daytime talk show on Friday and revealed that this is where he and his “Pretty in Pink” co-star, Andrew McCarthy, took a new turn.
“When we were shooting ‘Pretty in Pink,’ she and I didn’t get along,” Cryer, 58, recalled of the women of the ABC talk show.
“It was because there was tension,” he explained. “Interestingly, I saw him backstage and we had a great time, we had a great conversation.”
Cryer said she and McCarthy, 61, both appeared on a 2012 episode of “The View” to promote separate projects, but the unexpected task fulfillment also strained their personal relationship.
“Pretty in Pink” debuted in 1986 and is known as a “Brat Pack” film due to its cast including Molly Ringwald, Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts and James Spader.
“At any rate, what I realize now is that, having written a wonderful memoir called ‘Brat,’ he was already struggling with alcoholism when we were shooting that movie. I had projected all these things on him at that time. I thought he was such a sad guy who didn’t want to talk to me.
“We are enemies [as characters] On film, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends, Cryer added. “But there was no coordination between us at that time. I later found out he was going through some tough things. That was a lesson for me, it’s all about projection. U never know.”
McCarthy’s rep told Entertainment Weekly in a statement that, “Jon Cryer has turned out to be the sweetest, kindest guy,” — but joked that he wishes “he wouldn’t have decorated me backstage at ‘The View.’ “
The Post has contacted representatives for McCarthy and Cryer for comment.
Elsewhere in the episode, Cryer dismissed any hopes of returning to the “Two and a Half Men” reboot. He said he hasn’t spoken to his former co-star Charlie Sheen, 58, in years, but was happy to hear that the once-beleaguered star – “winning!” – “Doing much better.”
Cryer explained, “The thing for me is, when ‘Two and a Half Men’ was being made, Charlie was probably the highest paid actor ever in television.” “There is no one who has made the huge amount of money that he was making. And yet he blew it.”
He added, “So, you have to think one way – I love her, I wish the best for her.” “I hope he stays in good health for the rest of his life – but I don’t know if I want to do business with him long term.”
