Inside Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ ‘hell on earth’ Brooklyn jail that once held R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell
From Star Island to Prisoner 37452-054.
Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested on sex trafficking and racketeering charges, leaving the hip-hop legend being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The prison — which previously housed R. Kelly, who was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for child sex crimes, sex trafficking and fraud, and Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years for helping Jeffrey Epstein abuse young girls — has a reputation for poor conditions.
Opened in 1994, the concrete building that houses more than 1,200 people has been plagued by blood feuds, food contamination, murders and suicides, according to the New York Times. In addition, an electrical fire once left inmates without heat in the cold season.
The Metropolitan Detention Center became New York’s main jail when its sister jail in Manhattan was closed in 2021 due to poor conditions. (Convicted sex offender Epstein was found dead in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019, having committed suicide.)
In July, Edwin Cordero, an inmate at the Brooklyn detention center, died from injuries he suffered in a fight. His lawyer called the facility “an overcrowded, understaffed and neglected federal prison that is hell on earth.”
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robin Tarnofsky on Tuesday denied bail to Combs, 54, in the sex trafficking and racketeering case and ordered him to remain behind bars until his trial.
The “Act Bad” rapper’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, urged the judge to release his client on a $50 million bond, arguing that conditions at the Brooklyn jail were “appalling.”
However, the judge sided with the prosecution due to Combs’ history of violence, substance abuse, and obstruction.
One of Combs’ violent incidents was captured on a hotel’s video surveillance in 2016 and released to the public in May. In the clip, the Sean John founder violently attacked his then-girlfriend, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, as she tried to escape in an elevator.
The father of seven is currently facing at least eight trials in which he is accused of rape and sexual assault, among other crimes.
Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Agnifilo plans to appeal the judge’s decision to keep his client in custody without bail.
