Jennifer Lopez files for divorce to drop Ben Affleck’s last name, says taking his surname was ‘romantic’

Jennifer Lopez has requested to remove her husband Ben Affleck’s last name in her divorce filing.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the singer has asked a judge to change her legal name from Jennifer Lynn Affleck to Jennifer Lynn Lopez after she took the actor’s last name when they eloped in July 2022.

Lopez, 55, has previously spoken about becoming Mrs Affleck, describing the move as “romantic” and “traditional.”

Speaking to Vogue in November 2022, she said, “People will still call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together.”

“We are husband and wife. I am proud of that. I don’t think it is a problem.”

When asked if she considered casting the actor as Mr. Lopez, she replied, “No! It’s not traditional.”

“There’s no romance in it. It’s like it’s a power play, you know what I mean? I’m in complete control of my life and destiny and I feel empowered as a woman and as a person,” she explained.

“I can understand that people have their own feelings about it, and that’s fine. But if you want to know what I feel about it, I think it’s romantic. It still brings up tradition and romance for me, and maybe that’s just the kind of girl I am.”

Shortly after tying the knot, the music hitmaker revealed she had changed her last name when she referred to herself as “Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck” in her “On the JLo” newsletter in July 2022.

J.Lo previously planned to change her last name to Affleck when she and the “Gone Girl” star, 52, first got engaged in the early 2000s.

In July 2003 she told “Access Hollywood” that she “obviously” wanted to be Jennifer Affleck and have her married name printed on her stationery.

On Tuesday, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck after two years of marriage.

The “On the Floor” singer filed the papers in Georgia on their second wedding anniversary. She listed their separation date as April 26.

They reportedly did not have a pre-nup, which could lead to a fight over assets, including their $68 million Beverly Hills mansion, which they have put up for sale.

Sources previously told Page Six that Lopez felt “humiliated” because her second chance at love with Affleck didn’t work out. Meanwhile, the actor reportedly showed “no interest” in fixing their marriage.
