Jordan Spieth completes long-awaited left wrist surgery after disappointing, winless 2024 season

After a poor year for Jordan Spieth, the three-time major champion announced on Saturday that he has completed surgery on the left wrist that has troubled him over the past two years. He is expected to recover quickly and return to form next season.

“As I previously disclosed, I had surgery on my left wrist last week,” Spieth said in a statement. “The surgery went smoothly, and I am grateful for the exceptional medical team and their support. [wife] Annie and my family. Focused on rest and rehabilitation, and I look forward to returning to golf healthy and ready for 2025!”

Spieth said that — after missing the past two FedEx Cup Playoff events — it was his plan to have surgery.

“I’ll have the surgery as soon as possible, and then I’ll go through the process that I have to do from there,” he said. “If I don’t have a reason to hold back – which I don’t – then I’ll probably take it as slowly as I can.”

Spieth finished in the top 10 just three times during the 2024 season, with his best finish being third at The Sentry, the first PGA Tour event of 2024. He has not finished in the top 20 once in the four major championships.

Spieth just completed one of his two worst iron-playing seasons; he performed below average in 2024, according to Data Golf. While he said his wrist wasn’t bothering him when hitting the ball, Spieth also admitted he couldn’t imagine the injury wasn’t playing a role in how accurately he hits irons.

At the Masters earlier this season, Spieth said it was an “ECU tendon issue, which unfortunately I haven’t gotten fixed,” that was causing his problems. “When it flares up, it flares up for about 24 hours, and then it slowly gets better.”

Spieth will not participate in The Sentry, and he is not automatically entered into the PGA Tour’s signature event for 2025 because he did not finish in the top 50 in the 2024 FedEx Cup standings. However, he can still play in those events if he is in the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking or receives a sponsor invitation to one of the eight events highlighted by the PGA Tour.

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Truist Championship, Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship will be the PGA Tour’s other major events in 2025.

Spieth could begin his 2025 season at the Sony Open in Hawaii a week after The Sentry.
