Liam and Noel Gallagher feud timeline: From Oasis breakup to reunion rumours
It is one of the most famous feuds in music history.
When Liam and Noel Gallagher started the rock band Oasis, they had differences and their relationship broke down completely despite their success in the industry.
In 2009, a backstage fight between the two brothers during a concert led to a falling out between them and the “Wonderwall” group disbanded.
In the years that followed, Liam, 51, and Noel, 57, continued to take digs at each other on social media and in interviews while pursuing solo careers.
However, a possible reconciliation between the siblings has sparked rumours of an Oasis reunion, with an announcement expected on Tuesday, August 27.
It seems like Liam and Noel have finally put their differences aside and reunited the band.
Here’s the full timeline of Liam and Noel’s years-long feud,
1994: Noel briefly quits music before first North American tour
Three years after Oasis formed in Manchester, England, the group began their first US tour in Los Angeles. That night, a huge fight broke out during which Liam threw a tambourine at Noel’s head.
Noel told Uncut magazine: “It was the first night of the tour at the Whisky a Go Go, and everybody except me was drunk on crystal meth, someone got hit in the face with a chair, there was a big fight, the press called us a bunch of junkies and I took the tour float, my passport and fled to San Francisco.”
According to Noel, the band’s record label eventually convinced them to return.
1995: “Whibbling Rivalry” audio released
“Whibbling Riverly” was a single released under the name “Oss*s” which included a recording of the Gallagher brothers’ interview with NME in 2014. The siblings had a major falling out over an incident where they were being kicked off a yacht.
The 14-minute release peaked at number 52 on the UK Singles Chart. It is still the highest-charting interview release.
1996: Liam skips “MTV Unplugged”
Liam left his brother shortly before appearing on an episode of “MTV Unplugged.”
“When they said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Oasis,’ we walked out and [Liam] “There was nobody there,” Noel told Far Out magazine about the 1996 taping. “He said, ‘I’m not doing it.’ I thought, ‘Thank you very much.'”
According to Noel, Liam said that his throat began to hurt during rehearsals and that he subsequently stopped practising with the band prior to the recording of the episode.
“About an hour before we were due to go on the show, he turned up, his face all messed up. We said, ‘Well look, let’s see if you can sing a few songs,’ and it was horrible,” Noel recalled.
While Noel was doing the show alone, Liam was sitting in the balcony and bothering his brother.
2000: Noel briefly quits the game after a fierce fight
Noel left Oasis for a while, again, after a fight with his brother while they were out drinking in Barcelona. The Guardian reported that Liam questioned the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter from his ex-wife Meg Matthews, leading to a feud between the two.
“I never forgave him because he never apologised,” Noel said of the 2005 fight, according to the Guardian. Liam eventually did apologise, according to the Guardian.
August 2009: Noel leaves forever – and Oasis breaks up
Noel finally split from Oasis in 2009 after another heated row with his brother in Paris, where he was due to perform at the Rock en Seine festival.
“With some sadness and great relief … I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say whatever they want, but I couldn’t go on working with Liam another day,” Noel wrote in a statement at the time.
He told the Independent in 2021 that he made the decision while he was sitting in the back of a car outside the festival.
“And the driver pulled over and that was it. I didn’t feel relieved because I knew there was going to be a big storm. And there was going to be a lot of nonsense talked about,” Noel said.
He added, “Ultimately, one of the biggest bands of all time collapsed. And I couldn’t get back to England because the press had come to my house and my wife was there with my kids. So we had to get her out in the middle of the night and they came and joined me somewhere in France. And then when we finally got back to England, of course everything went haywire.”
Oasis broke up after Noel left, but Liam and the rest of the band stayed together under the name Beady Eye. They split in 2014.
February 2010: Liam ignores Noel at the Brit Awards
At the 2010 Brit Awards, Liam accepted the award for Best Album of the Last 30 Years for Oasis. “(What’s the story) Morning Glory?”
During his speech he thanked all of his founding band members except his brother.
He later explained the reason for this neglect, saying, “I’m fed up with it being all about me and Noel, everything’s been about me and him the last few months, so I thought it would be fair to mention the other people who worked on the album and the best fans in the world.”
December 2011: Liam said he’d rather ‘eat his own poop’ than reunite with Noel
Liam stepped up his derogatory comments towards Noel in a 2011 interview with LA Weekly.
“I’d rather eat my own shit than be in a band with him again,” Liam said. “He’s a miserable little fuck, if you know what I mean. But if the fans want it, I’ll do it.”
May 2016: Liam begins his “potato” insults about Noel
Starting in 2016, Liam referred to his brother as “Potato” (now X) on Twitter. He shared photos of Noel and wrote the word “Potato”.
When asked in an interview why he called Noel a potato, Liam said, “Because he looks like a potato.”
June 2017: Liam slams Noel for not attending Manchester benefit concert
Liam, not Noel, was one of the performers at the “One Love Manchester” event held in 2017 following the terrorist attack at Ariana Grande’s concert.
The day after the incident, Liam tweeted: “Manchester I’d like to apologise for my brother’s absence last night so disappointed stay beautiful stay safe LG x.”
In another tweet, Liam said: “Noails get out of the country don’t we all love you get on a plane and play your songs for the kids you’re miserable.”
Liam said: “Forget the reunion mate, it’s not about Oasis, it’s about people helping other people and he’s shown his true colours once again.”
July 2018: Liam begs Noel to reunite Oasis
After years of attacking Noel, Liam publicly appealed to his brother to reunite the band.
In July 2018, Liam wrote on Twitter, “I forgive you, let’s get the Big O back together and stop talking crap about the drinks being at my expense.”
When Noel didn’t respond, Liam tweeted: “I’ll take that as a ‘no’.”
May 2021: Noel finally addresses Oasis reunion
During an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show, Noel addressed Liam, saying they had been offered £100 million to get back together.
“There’s not £100 million in the music business for all of us,” Noel said. “If someone wanted to offer me £100 million right now, I’d say I’d do it right now, but I think that’s ridiculous.” He then added, “The funny thing though is that I think Liam actually believes in it, which is the funny thing.”
October 2022: Liam claims Noel ‘blocked’ him from Taylor Hawkins tribute song
At a tribute concert for the late Taylor Hawkins, Liam alleged his brother “stopped” him from playing the Oasis song at Wembley Stadium in London.
Liam frowned“No Oasis songs because Angry Torrent has blocked them, he even blocked the Oasis one I sang for the Taylor Hawkins tribute, he’s a horrible little man.”
one of Follow-up Tweets“You can stop us using the songs but you can’t erase our memories, shame on you Noel Gallagher,” he wrote.
February 2024: Liam takes a dig at Noel again
When Oasis were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Liam took the opportunity to criticise Noel again.
Liam said that, if Oasis were inducted, he would not attend the ceremony in Cleveland because he would “be washing his hair and getting pedicures and manicures,” while of Noel, he said, “This little boy loves hanging out with celebrities, so he’ll probably go.”
August 2024: Oasis announce reunion
Both Gallagher brothers have hinted on social media that an Oasis reunion could be coming soon.
The band’s account has hinted that a big announcement is coming with a brief video with the date Tuesday (August 27) and the time 8 a.m. EST.
Both Noel and Liam shared the same video.
According to the Sunday Times, the brothers are scheduled to perform a series of concerts in the summer of 2025 at various venues, including Wembley Stadium and Manchester’s Heaton Park.
Liam also hinted that he had reconciled with his brother while performing at the Reading Festival in England on August 25. He dedicated the song “Half the World Away” to Noel.
