Ludvig Oberg will undergo knee surgery and could return to the PGA Tour by the end of the year, according to reports.
This week will mark another first in Ludvig Oberg’s professional career, though he wishes he could have avoided it. According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, the 24-year-old will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus that will keep him out for about a month. The injury was discovered the week of the Wells Fargo Championship in May when Oberg withdrew from the tournament because of left knee pain.
“This week, Ludwig Oberg will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee that has been bothering him since the spring,” Lewis said. “Ludwig will be able to hit balls 3-4 weeks after the procedure. He will likely return to play in 2024 on a limited schedule.”
After withdrawing from the Wells Fargo Championship, Aberg returned to competition the following week at the PGA Championship at Valhalla. Arriving in Louisville with a brace on his left knee, the smooth-swinging right-hander had trouble bending properly to read putts and ultimately missed the cut in his championship debut.
Although Aberg’s green-reading technique did not return to normal the rest of the season, his game recovered. In his last nine tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule, the Swede has three top-five finishes and a T12 result at the U.S. Open after holding the 36-hole lead. Aberg finished his first full PGA Tour season tied for solo 16th at the Tour Championship on Sunday, but his year is far from over.
“I’ll probably just get my legs up a lot, make sure I get some time to recover, get some time to work on some things, and I’ll definitely go play the DP World Tour in Abu Dhabi, Dubai,” Aberg said ahead of the Tour Championship. “Those are my plans right now. It could change. But right now I’m here.”
Aberg, currently eighth in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, will return for the final two events on the European circuit’s schedule. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is scheduled for November 7-10, while the DP World Tour Championship takes place the following week on November 14-17.
