Mariah Carey said she felt ’emotionally and physically safe’ after having no contact with her sister Alison before her death
Mariah Carey had a rocky relationship with her late sister, Alison Carey.
Alison, 63, was estranged from the legendary singer, 55, for several years before she died last weekend on the same day as her mother Patricia, 87. The causes of death for both are unknown.
Alison’s friend of nine years, David Baker, told People that Alison and Mariah hadn’t seen each other since 1994 or 2002.
Four years ago, Mariah revealed in her 2000 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” that she had cut ties with Alison, Patricia and her brother Morgan Carey.
“For my own peace of mind and sanity, my therapist encouraged me to change and redesign my family name,” he wrote in his book.
“My mum became Pat to me, Morgan my former brother and Alison my former sister… I had to give up the hope that one day they would miraculously become the mum, big brother and big sister I had imagined.
“I’ve had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them. That’s been helpful. I have no doubt that it’s safer for me emotionally and physically to have no contact with my ex-brother and ex-sister,” the “Hero” singer said.
Mariah described her sister as “deeply hurt” in her book, and said Alison “saw things a child should never see” before Mariah was born.
“I know that what he experienced damaged and derailed his childhood,” Maria said. “When the family fell apart and our parents turned against each other, he was fully aware of it; he felt the full pain of the family falling apart.”
The Grammy winner also made the shocking claim that when she was just 12, Alison gave her the drug Valium, and handed her over to one of her boyfriends.
Alison denied the allegations and later sued her famous sister, claiming “Defendant’s already badly damaged older sister has been intentionally caused extreme emotional distress by Defendant’s ruthless, cruel, vindictive, vile, and entirely unnecessary public humiliation.”
NBC News found a subpoena listed in New York but could not obtain additional information on the status of that suit.
Morgan, 64, also sued Mariah over her memoir after the singer claimed her brother had been violent towards their mother Patricia and father Alfred, who died in 2002.
Mariah’s brother said the lawsuit cost her work opportunities because of her book. Mariah later responded to the lawsuit and said she was trying to “inspire” people by sharing Morgan’s story.
According to Today, New York Supreme Court records show that the defamation suit he filed is still active in the court.
Following the deaths of her mother and sister, Maria released a statement to The Post on Monday, saying, “I am heartbroken that I lost my mother last weekend.”
“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life that same day,” Maria said. “I feel so lucky to have been able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed away. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this difficult time.”
Baker told People that Alison had been hospitalized just three weeks before her death and was “having problems with her internal organs.”
“We saw this all coming, but it’s still a shock,” he said. “She got very sick very quickly and a month later, she was gone.”
In an interview with The Sun, Baker claimed that Alison was “unhappy” that Mariah had “broken off contact with her.” He also said that Mariah did not contact Alison even after she was told her older sister was about to pass away.
