Matthew Perry described it as ‘being hit over the head with a giant shovel’ before his death from ketamine overdose.

A year before he was found dead, Matthew Perry detailed his experience with ketamine in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”

The late “Friends” star, who underwent ketamine therapy to treat his depression, described the anesthetic in his book, saying the drug made it feel like “being hit in the head with a giant shovel.”

“Ketamine was like a huge exhale. They took me into a room, sat me down, put headphones in my ears so I could listen to music, blindfolded me, and hooked up an IV,” Perry wrote.

The actor recalled being a fan of ketamine, as he became addicted to its hallucinogenic effects.

,[It] “It has my name written on it — they could have called it ‘Matty,’” he wrote, adding that he would often “get sidetracked” and “look things up.”

“I’ve been in therapy for so long that it didn’t even scare me. Oh, there’s a horse in there? Well — maybe,” he added.

“As the music played and the ‘K’ went through me, it became all about the ego and the death of the ego.”

Perry said doctors will use a combination of the following: [anxiety medication] He took Ativan and ketamine during his one-hour therapy sessions.

He wrote, “I often felt like I was dying at that time. ‘Oh,’ I thought, ‘that’s what happens when you die.'”

“Yet I would continually sign up for this crap because it was something different, and anything different is good.”

Perry died from “the acute effects of ketamine use,” which led to his drowning death on October 28, 2023.

Last week, it was revealed that Perry’s longtime assistant, Kenneth “Kenny” Iwamasa, was the person who administered the lethal dose of ketamine that killed him.

According to the Justice Department, Iwamasa “admitted to repeatedly injecting Perry with ketamine without medical training” and administered “multiple injections” on the day Perry died.

On August 7, the former assistant pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, causing death. He could face up to 15 years in prison.

Perry had claimed to have been sober for years, but prior to his death it was said he had lost control of his addiction.
