Meghan McCain criticizes ‘insensitive’ Blake Lively for ‘awkward’ promotion of ‘It Ends With Us’
Meghan McCain is hopping on board the Blake Lively hate train.
The 39-year-old political commentator called Lively, 36, “insensitive” for the way she handled the topic of domestic violence while promoting her new film “It Ends With Us.”
“If you’re taking on the responsibility of telling the story of one woman in a domestic violence situation, you have to respect that you’re representing millions of women and men who have been victims of domestic violence,” McCain said on Wednesday’s episode of his “Citizen McCain” podcast.
“I was very surprised by some of their answers,” he said.
Lively has been criticized for not discussing the topic of domestic violence in the film, but instead promoting her new hair care line, Blake Brown Beauty, and her floral fashion.
In a viral clip from one of her interviews, Lively told fans to “grab your friends and put on your floral dresses” and go see the movie, which is based on the best-selling book by Colleen Hoover.
McCain criticized Lively, saying, “I think she’s setting a tone in the press with this, ‘Wear your flowers and come together girls.'”
“I haven’t even read the book,” the Republican blogger added. “I didn’t know it was about domestic violence until this press tour. I don’t want to go see a funny movie about domestic violence with my girlfriends wearing flowers. I think it’s very insensitive and very, frankly, weird.”
“I don’t understand why she’s famous other than ‘Gossip Girl’ and why she’s married to Ryan Reynolds. I can’t really think of any movies or projects she’s been in,” McKean said of Lively.
The former “The View” host said Lively is “in a position of high-level privilege” by being a “beautiful, white woman” and that the actress has “done real damage to her career” based on the extreme response to her way of promoting the film.
“That doesn’t mean she’ll go away, but I think it would be wise to have a little humility and do a little research on what you’re representing,” McCain said.
McCain also said, “I’m tired of hearing about Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. I feel like I hear about them all the time.” “I think it’s a dangerous place for any celebrity or any person in the public eye to be. I’m tired of hearing about those two.”
In addition to the criticism of Lively’s comments on the “It Ends With Us” press tour, there have also been rumors that she had a fight with co-star and director Justin Baldoni on the set of the film.
Fans noticed that Baldoni, 40, wasn’t speaking to the press with any of his co-stars. He also declined to appear on the red carpet with Lively — who served as a producer on the film — and the rest of the cast.
Baldoni has hired crisis public relations manager Melissa Nathan amid allegations of impropriety.
Brandon Sklenar, who plays Lively’s boyfriend in the film, became the first cast member to speak out about the alleged drama on Instagram earlier this week.
She criticised those who were “defaming the women who put their heart and soul into making this film”, saying that the cruel comments were “contrary” to the film’s message.
“Whatever may or may not have happened behind the scenes should not and hopefully will not diminish our intentions in making this film,” Sklenar added. “It’s disappointing to see so much negativity being presented online.”
Lively and Baldoni have not said anything about the drama.
