Meryl Streep and Martin Short hold hands at ‘Only Murders’ premiere after dating rumors
They’re playing it coy.
Months after Meryl Streep and Martin Short denied dating rumors, the two actors were spotted holding hands at the Season 4 premiere of “Only Murders in the Building” in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Streep and Short first sparked dating rumors when they looked very cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes in January.
Following the incident, fans took to social media enthusiastically to wish the potential couple well.
“Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if it’s true… it’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft…” The fan posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“I need someone to talk to about these Meryl Streep/Martin Short dating rumors, this is literally my Roman Empire, I swear,” another fan wrote wrote,
A representative for Short, 74, later told TMZ that the actor and Streep, 75, are “just friends.”
The “Father of the Bride” star reiterated that sentiment on an episode of the “Club Random with Bill Maher” podcast that same month.
Still, Short and Streep have been spotted together on several occasions. In March, they were spotted attending the Broadway show “Merrily We Roll Along” at the Hudson Theatre in New York City.
And now, they have been spotted holding each other’s hands.
The comedian and the “Devil Wears Prada” actress play sweethearts on the hit Hulu show, which also stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.
The show follows semi-retired actor Charles (Martin), Broadway director Oliver (Short) and artist Mabel (Gomez), who all share an interest in true crime podcasts. They become friends while investigating suspected murderers in their building.
Streep joined the cast in Season 3 as Loretta, a struggling actress and Oliver’s girlfriend.
In a video shared by Deadline, Short and Streep looked cozy holding hands while strolling with Martin through the Paramount lot in Los Angeles on Thursday evening.
Short is a widower, having been married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman — with whom he had three children, Katherine, 40, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34 — from 1980 until his death from cancer in 2010.
“Our marriage was a triumph,” Short told AARP Magazine in 2019. “So that’s why it’s tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It’s ‘Hey Nan,’ you know? How she would react to this or that decision, especially in regards to our three kids.”
Sources told Page Six in October that Streep — who married Don Gummer in 1978 and has four children with him, singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 44, actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32 — have been quietly “separated for more than six years.”
“Only Murderers in the Building” Season 4 premieres August 27 on Hulu.
