Mindy Kaling jokes about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s divorce during DNC 2024 speech
Even the Democratic National Convention is talking about Bennifer.
Two days after Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from husband Ben Affleck, Mindy Kaling took the stage at the 2024 DNC in Chicago on Wednesday and gave a special thanks to Massachusetts native Affleck.
“I love you, Massachusetts!” Kaling shouted to the crowd. “Everybody always hates on us. But they just don’t get it. Go Sox! Go Jayson Tatum! Ben Affleck, stay strong!”
“Dunkin’ Donuts has the best coffee in the world!” the former “Office” cast member said, referring to Affleck’s personal passion and professional association with the coffee chain.
Kaling and Affleck, 52, are linked despite being from the same state.
More than 20 years ago, Kaling co-wrote and starred with Affleck in an off-Broadway play called “Matt & Ben.” In the 2002 project, Kaling and her co-writer and college best friend, Brenda Withers, pretended to be Affleck and Matt Damon when they were writing the screenplay for the 1997 Oscar-winning drama “Good Will Hunting.”
Kaling’s comments about Affleck come after Lopez, 55, officially filed paperwork to end her marriage with the “Air” actor.
The filing comes on the second anniversary of the couple’s second wedding ceremony, which took place in Georgia in August 2022. They first married in Las Vegas in July 2022.
Lopez had revealed her and Affleck’s separation date was April 26, 2024. This was less than two weeks before Bennifer divorce rumors began, when Lopez attended the 2024 Met Gala alone.
The “Gigli” co-stars later listed their $60 million Beverly Hills marital home for sale. Affleck purchased a $20.5 million Los Angeles mansion for himself, though he has been living in a rental home in L.A.’s Brentwood neighborhood.
Lopez and Affleck first began dating in 2002 and got engaged shortly after. They split in 2004 but got back together in 2021 before marrying in 2022.
Though they appeared to be a happy couple before divorce rumors surfaced, Page Six reported on Wednesday that their relationship problems actually began during their honeymoon in Lake Como, Italy.
“He was unhappy about the paparazzi following him,” a source said of Affleck, adding that Lopez “is an international superstar, and she acted like it was a surprise to her that people were following her.”
The insider claimed that when Affleck and Lopez weren’t in front of the cameras, “they barely spoke to each other during one of the happiest times of their lives. He led her to believe he was a changed man, and that was short-lived.”
Affleck’s desire to stay out of the spotlight was evident in Lopez’s recent documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which offered an insight into the couple’s relationship from Lopez’s perspective.
“I don’t think he’s super comfortable with me doing all of this,” she admitted in one part of the documentary. “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’s going to support me in every way possible because he knows he can’t stop me from making the music that I make and writing the words that I write. It’s going to happen and he doesn’t want to stop me.”
Affleck previously clarified his doubts about talking about their rekindled romance ahead of their wedding in 2022.
“One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that it’s not wise to share everything with the world,” he told The Wall Street Journal in December 2021.
