NHL star Johnny Gaudreau’s sister Katie’s wedding is called off after her brother Matthew and his wife were killed by a drunk driver.
NHL star Johnny Gaudreau’s sister’s wedding has been canceled after a suspected drunk driver killed her and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, Page Six has confirmed.
Katie Goudreau and her fiancé, Devin Joyce, canceled their Friday wedding at St. Mary Parish in Gloucester City, New Jersey, in the wake of Thursday’s tragedy.
The bride and groom-to-be were scheduled to walk down the aisle at the Roman Catholic Church at 1:45 p.m., with Johnny and Matthew serving as groomsmen and his other sister, Kristen Vanello, as maid of honor.
According to Katie and Joyce’s page on The Knot, guests were scheduled to head to Lucy by Cescafe in Philadelphia for the couple’s reception scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
St. Mary Parish did not immediately return a phone call from Page Six.
Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey at 8:19 p.m. on Thursday.
Police said the driver, Sean M. Higgins, attempted to pass two slow-moving vehicles but struck the brother and sister from behind on the eve of his sister’s birthday.
Higgins, 43, reportedly failed an intoxication test and admitted to drinking five or six beers before the incident.
He was booked into jail and charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, according to inmate records viewed by Page Six.
Johnny’s team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, released a statement Friday morning saying they were “shocked and heartbroken” by this “unimaginable tragedy.”
The organization also offered its condolences to the lefty’s wife, Meredith Gaudreau, whom he married in September 2021, and their two children: daughter Noah, 1 year, and son Johnny Jr., 6 months.
Matthew was also a hockey player, most recently playing for the Worcester Railers.
