Report explains why Ryan Tannehill hasn’t re-signed with the Dolphins despite interest in returning to the NFL
When Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a head injury in Week 2, it didn’t take long for some to immediately advocate that he could return to the game. Potential Ryan Tannehill reunionNow we know why that hasn’t come to fruition yet, as Miami recently added former Baltimore Ravens player Tyler Huntley to the team as a replacement.
According to NFL Media, Tannehill “wants to get back” on the field after playing unsigned throughout the offseason. “If he’s going to play, [he prefers it] He will be playing for a team where he can play the whole season.”
That could be the case for the Dolphins, as Tagovailoa has no clear timeline for a return after suffering his third head injury in two years. That’s not a guarantee, though, as NFL Media reported shortly after Tagovailoa’s latest concussion that the veteran had “no plans to retire,” despite some prominent figures calling for him to consider doing so. The Washington Post responded by reporting on Wednesday that Tagovailoa has considered a return. No “definitive” decision has been made No decision has been made about his future, but either way, the signal-caller could be eligible to return after four games following his time on injured reserve.
Tannehill, meanwhile, said before the season he would be extremely selective about any new opportunities.
“Nothing felt right to me during free agency, and then I made a lot of peace with it after that,” the 36-year-old former Tennessee Titans star told the “Scoop City” podcast during the offseason. “If something happens down the line — whether it’s training camp, or if a player is out on the team — you never know what’s going to happen. [But I’m] Don’t wait anxiously for that call.”
