San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Piersall shot in chest during attempted robbery, ‘stable condition’
San Francisco 49ers player Ricky Piersall is in “stable” condition after he was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery on Saturday.
“San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Piersall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon,” the 49ers said in a statement Saturday night.
“He was shot in the chest and is in serious but stable condition. We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”
Hours earlier, Pearsall, 23, was on his way to sign autographs at an event center at Geary and Market when he was attacked by a suspect carrying a Rolex, according to San Francisco police.
Piersall and the suspect got into a fight over the gun and the NFL star was shot in the chest. The perpetrator was also shot, but it’s unclear where the bullet hit.
Piersall and the suspect were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.
The suspect, a 17-year-old man from Tracy, California, has been arrested, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.
Scott said there is no indication the teen targeted Pearsall because of his career and said the suspect appeared to be acting alone “as far as we know” but authorities will check nearby surveillance cameras as the investigation continues.
Ricky’s mother, Erin Pearsall, also updated fans on her son’s condition on Facebook Saturday night, writing that he was “shot in the chest and it exited his back.”
“Thank God it didn’t touch his vital organs. He’s in good spirits right now,” he wrote, adding that Ricky “survived by the grace of God.”
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said a decision on whether to charge the juvenile suspect will be made early next week.
Ricky was selected by the 49ers in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft in April.
He played college football for the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Florida Gators.
