Stephen Curry reiterates desire to play his entire NBA career with Warriors after signing contract extension
After signing the One-year, $62.6 million contract extension On Thursday, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry reiterated that he wants to end his NBA career where it began.
In an interview with Marcus Thompson of The Athletic, Curry said his decision to sign the extension was a vote of confidence in the organization. The front office wasn’t able to acquire another star this summer, but it did attempt to trade for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen. Curry said he has agreed to extend his contract. Consistently maintained that he wants to be one Warrior for life As long as he feels like he and the franchise are on the same page in terms of trying to compete. It shows they’re still on the same page.
From The Athletic:
“It’s no different from my perspective,” Curry said. Athletic“You appreciate the position and the opportunity and the support from the guys that have been with you on this journey. I’ve always said I wanted to play for the same team my whole career. So it’s nice to put the (extension) question away and just focus on basketball and the season.”
,
Curry said, “It’s still about winning, and taking the steps necessary to give yourself a chance. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectations haven’t changed.”
Signing the extension doesn’t guarantee that Curry will never play for another team, but it does send a clear message that Golden State plans to make a run for a fifth championship for the next three seasons. If he wanted to maximize his influence over the front office, he could instead decide that, after Klay Thompson left this summer, he wanted to play the 2024-25 season and see what changes happen to the roster next year before signing an extension. In exchange for his commitment, Curry secured another $62.6 million in guaranteed money — not a bad salary for someone who will be 39 in the final year of his deal.
In the interview, Curry described his time with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics as a “10 out of 12 great experiences.” Curry scored 36 points in the semifinal against Serbia and made 9 of 14 shots from 3-point range, helping the United States make a comeback. In the Americans’ win against France in the gold medal game, Curry scored 24 points and made 8 of 12 shots from deep, including four straight 3s at the end of the fourth quarter, another highlight of his career.
“It was the most surreal feeling, especially the way it ended,” Curry said. “I felt like a kid again.”
Ideally, he’ll be able to feel that again in a Warriors uniform. In 2023-24, Golden State’s season ended with a loss to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in.
