Stephen Curry will finally sign contract extension with Warriors, according to report
Stephen Curry recently returned from playing a major role on Team USA’s gold medal-winning Olympic team, which was a reminder that, yes, he’s still one of the best players in the entire universe. Amidst all of his spectacular shooting, it was hard not to notice how well Curry and LeBron James play together. Of course, this got people wondering if the two could work together, but if that happens, it wouldn’t require Curry leaving the Golden State Warriors.
According to Marc Stein, Curry is expected to sign a contract extension with the Warriors, but the timeline is unclear. The four-time champion has the freedom to sign a one-year, $62.6 million contract between now and before opening night on Oct. 22, or he can wait for a slightly more lucrative contract that could be two years and around $130 million, according to Stein.
However, whatever he decides, it’s clear that Curry is committed to staying with the Warriors beyond the two years remaining on his current contract. This should be a relief for the Warriors, who lost two of their main targets, Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, and franchise mainstay Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks this summer. But while Golden State failed to trade Markkanen to sign George, they did bring in some great role players like Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton.
We’ll have to see if these additions will be enough to make the Warriors a title contender once again, and Thompson’s absence means Curry will have more responsibility on the offensive side of the ball. Without Thompson, Golden State is hoping for Brandin Podziemski to become a star, which is why they were reluctant to include him in trade talks with the Utah Jazz for Markkanen. If that happens, the Warriors will be in good shape, and the team feels they are in a “good position” to trade for an upgrade at some point in the future since they have all the draft picks they have going forward. If that’s the message being given to Curry, then there should be optimism about him remaining with Golden State in the final years of his career.
But optimism can only take you so far. This will be the first time since Curry’s first two years in the league that Thompson won’t be on the field or on the sideline with him. This is going to be a big change for the Warriors, and if Golden State struggles this season and fails to land any of its targets this year or next, we could perhaps see Curry flirting with free agency in 2027.
