Tennis star Nick Kyrgios considering retirement after 2023 due to injury: ‘My time in the game could be over’
Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has revealed he is considering retirement, writing in a column for the Sydney Morning Herald that “his time in the sport may be over”. Kyrgios said he recently spoke to his agent about the possibility of ending his playing career.
“The reality is that a part of me knows that my time in the game may be over,” Kyrgios wrote. “And I agree with that.”
Kyrgios said he has “reached the point where life after tennis is a possibility that excites me.”
“I could travel the world making really good money commentating on sports, just like I do now interviewing people like Gordon Ramsay and Mike Tyson on my talk show,” Kyrgios wrote.
Kyrgios hasn’t said he’s definitely planning to retire, but it’s something he’s still considering.
“I don’t know when I’ll be back,” Kyrgios wrote. “I’m hopeful that I’ll recover from the wrist injury that required surgery in time for Wimbledon and the US Open last year, but there are no guarantees.
“My body will never be the same and injuries can take you down a different path than you imagined.”
Kyrgios has had a very successful career, with his highest career ranking of No. 13 coming on October 24, 2016. The Australian native had appeared in her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2022, before losing to Novak. Djokovic.
In 2023, Kyrgios was forced to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery after tearing his meniscus and also tearing a ligament in his wrist. Kyrgios also suffered ankle and foot injuries in 2023, which were sustained during an alleged burglary at his home.
