In May 2023, it was reported that NFL legend Tom Brady was in discussions to become a limited partner of the Las Vegas Raiders. More than a year later, his purchase has yet to be approved. Why? There are several reasons for this.

According to Pro Football Talk, one of those reasons is that Mark Davis offered Brady a “discount above market value,” which the other owners didn’t like. Another reason has to do with Brady’s new job as a broadcaster with Fox.

NFL owners won’t be thrilled to see a partial owner of an NFL franchise get the same access other broadcasters have with NFL teams. That’s why the league has laid out a list of broadcasting restrictions for Brady if his ownership bid is approved.

Via the AP, after reports that there could be sanctions, the NFL decided that the sanctions would take effect immediately due to his pending ownership deal with the Raiders. Brady will be able to announce Raiders games, but he must abide by the league constitution and bylaws that prohibit public criticism of other teams as well as officials.

ESPN reports the league presented a slide titled “Brady – Broadcast Restrictions” to owners during league meetings in Minneapolis. Here are some of the rules:

  • Not allowed to stay at another team’s facility
  • Can’t witness the practice
  • Cannot attend broadcast production meetings (in person or virtually)

Broadcasters receive all of these perks when preparing for their matchups. It enhances the overall product of the broadcast. Brady will be denied these benefits. Other Fox employees will not receive these limitations.

Additionally, Brady will be subject to other league policies that affect other owners:

  • He could also face a fine or suspension if he goes too far in criticising sports officials or other clubs
  • Subject to the league’s gambling policy
  • Subject to the league’s anti-tampering policies: only “strictly social communication with members of other clubs” is permitted.

It’s unknown when NFL owners will vote on Brady’s bid. The next opportunity will be in October.
