Alexander Volkanovski failed twice against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, but he is still top at featherweight. A potentially injured Volkanovski defends his 145-pound title against hungry contender Ilya Topuria at UFC 298 in Anaheim, California on February 17.
It’s been a long time since Volkanovski faced this much doubt heading into a featherweight title defense. Volkanovski sits uncomfortably as a -150 betting favorite heading to Honda Center in Anaheim. It’s a modest margin considering his status as MMA’s greatest featherweight, but he’s facing one of the sport’s fastest-rising stars. Topuria is a featherweight force with 12 stoppages in 14 undefeated fights. Loss is guaranteed even if distance is covered. Just ask Josh Emmett, against whom Topuria posted an incredible 50-42 scorecard to earn his title shot. Volkanovski’s relatively quick turnaround after being kicked in the head by Makhachev in October only eases the concerns.
The undercard will definitely deliver action with some big names returning to the Octagon. The middleweight contender moves closer to a title shot when former champion Robert Whittaker takes on former title challenger Paulo Costa in the co-main event. The top welterweights meet in a fight rescheduled from December when Ian Machado takes on Gary Geoff Neal. A new bantamweight title challenger could be crowned when Merab Dvalishvili takes on former champion Henry Cejudo. And the middleweights kick off the PPV when Anthony Hernandez takes on Roman Kopylov.
