UFC 305: Du Plessis vs. Adesanya preview
Adesanya ruled the middleweight division for three and a half years, starting with winning the interim UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 236 in April 2019 and then becoming the unified champion at UFC 243 in October of that year. He began his UFC career 23-1, with the only loss coming when he moved up a weight class to challenge Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title in March 2021. Adesanya owns the second-longest win streak (12) in UFC middleweight division history, a streak that ended when he lost the belt via TKO to Alex Pereira in November 2022.
While Adesanya won the title back in a rematch five months later – thus making him the only two-time UFC middleweight champion in the promotion’s history – The Last Stylebender then lost the title to Sean Strickland in an upcoming bout. Du Plessis would then defeat Strickland for his first UFC championship in January 2024. The South African fighter is undefeated in his UFC career (7-0) and part of a nine-fight winning streak overall.
Du Plessis (21-2) has a much more diverse arsenal than Adesanya (24-3) as the latter has not won a decision by submission in any of his 27 career bouts. Adesanya has a kickboxing background and is tied with Anderson Silva for the most knockdowns (13) in the history of the UFC middleweight division. As for Du Plessis, he has 10 wins via submission, nine via knockout and two via decision in his career as he has a background in judo, wrestling, BJJ and kickboxing.
According to the tale of the tape, Du Plessis is five years younger and doesn’t have the fatigue of Adesanya, as the former champion also has over 80 pro boxing and kickboxing bouts. However, Adesanya has the edge in terms of measurements, standing three inches taller with a four-inch reach and a 1.5-inch leg reach advantage. Both fighters are close to each other in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings as Du Plessis enters UFC 305 at No. 11 in the promotion, while Adesanya is No. 13. UFC 305 Predictions
We’ll share one of Vithalani’s UFC 305 picks here: He’s backing Jairzinho Rozenstruik (-250) to prevail over Tai Tuivasa (+205) in a heavyweight bout on the main card. Tuivasa’s career has gone downhill after he knocked out Derrick Lewis in the second round in 2022. He has since lost four consecutive bouts, each time being knocked out before the bout was completed.
Rozenstruik is not only as strong as Tuivasa, but he has better conditioning and defense. He lands his best punches when countering, and Tuivasa struggles to hide his shots. Tuivasa has suffered so many injuries in recent years that Vithalani may not consider backing him in this fight.
“Tuivasa’s best chance is to catch Rozenstruik with a flurry of punches and catch him with a looping shot,” Vithlani told SportsLine. While that’s certainly possible, I think Tuivasa is too outmatched against a balanced striker like Rozenstruik.” You can see more UFC 305 picks at SportsLine.
How to get selected for UFC 305
Vithlani has strong picks for Du Plessis vs. Adesanya and other bouts on the UFC 305 card. He’s also backing an underdog who is “a much more dangerous striker” and will emerge with a big win. Those picks and his complete analysis are available only at SportsLine.
