Umpire carried off field after being hit in the neck by Giancarlo Stanton’s broken bat during Yankees game
Home plate umpire Nick Mahrle exited the Yankees vs. Rockies game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon (GameTracker) after being hit in the neck by the barrel of a broken bat. His neck was stabilized and he was taken off the field. The Yankees say Mahrley is being evaluated by the team’s medical staff and “undergoing a variety of tests,” according to The Athletic.
Here is the play’s details. It was nothing but an unfortunate injury when Giancarlo Stanton’s bat broke on his swing. New York’s training staff took care of Mahrley, who got down on one knee, before he was taken off the field.
Crew chief Marvin Hudson took over from behind the plate when play resumed. Second base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt moved from second base to first base.
Mahrley, 41, has worked more than 400 big league games. He was called up to umpire from 2017-22, then joined the full-time staff in 2023.
