Tempers flared Monday night after a physical confrontation with the Bluegrass State in the basketball tournament, as a team made up of former Kentucky players defeated a team made up of former Louisville players 70-61 in overtime.

Security personnel had to intervene after the big match, which took place in front of a TBT-record 13,506 spectators at Freedom Hall in Louisville, led to some pushing and screaming among some players.

British team “La Familia” advanced to the semi-finals of the competition with a win over “The Ville”, coming away with a margin of two wins and a prize of $1 million to be split among the members of the winning team.

With the heated nature of the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry as the backdrop inside a famous venue — Louisville played its home games at Freedom Hall until 2010 — tensions were high. Famous former Wildcats like Eric Bledsoe and Willie Cauley-Stein represented La Familia, while former Louisville stars like Montrezl Harrell and Russ Smith represented The Ville.

As a sign of what was to come, La Familia’s Andrew Harrison and The Ville’s Chris Jones received double technicals early in the game. La Familia led 30-27 at halftime and extended its lead to 20 in the third quarter before The Ville cut the gap to six. Eventually, Harrison hit the game-winning hit for La Familia in the “Elam Ending” format.

Shortly after, the routine post-game chat between the teams turned hostile and The Ville’s Chinanu Onuaku became the centre of the altercation.

Nate Sestina of La Familia said there was “a lot of talking” throughout the game, but “nothing crazy or personal.” However, according to Sestina, Onuaku was offended when members of La Familia made the “L down” gesture.

“He spit in my face,” Sestina said. “I’ll leave it at that. Nothing crazy. He spit on me. It’s his fault.”

With the win, La Familia advances to Friday’s semifinals, where it will face Carmen’s Crew, a team made up mostly of former Ohio State players.
