When will the transfer window close for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and more?
The transfer deadline for European football clubs is fast approaching and the cut-off point for deals is soon approaching. This summer’s business hasn’t been as busy as expected, but excitement is expected in the closing ceremonies as the top five leagues in UEFA competition kick off on Friday, 30 August.
Be sure to check out CBS Sports Golazo Network’s coverage of the transfer deadline with a special edition of Scoreline on Friday, August 30. Why is the window closing quickly?
In recent years, the regular deadline of August 31 has fallen on a weekend and has therefore been extended to the next business day which this year will be Monday, September 2. However, this time the leagues decided to close their collective window on Friday, a decision taken after discussions between the top five competitions. Other leagues can and will remain open and close at later dates after August 30.
Can clubs still sign free agents?
Yes — clubs in any league can sign uncontracted players at any time after the deadline. As long as a player is not contractually tied to another club, deals can be agreed between players and clubs after the window closes. Registration for competition squads is a different story — particularly in UEFA competitions, but any deals for contracted players can only be officially completed when the window reopens in the winter.
Which windows remain open for a while?
Notable European leagues that will remain open and can sign players from the top five leagues after they close are Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium and Turkiye. The Primera Liga and Eredivisie windows are open next week until September 2, while Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League is open until September 6 and Turkiye’s Super League until September 13. With Europe quieting down, one to keep an eye on is the Pro League in Saudi Arabia which remains open for about a month before shutting down on October 6 while the midseason MLS window already closed on August 14.
