Wimbledon 2024 results, winners, scores: Barbora Krejcikova beats Jasmine Paolini to win second Grand Slam title
Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Saturday to win the 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles championship. The win marks Krejcikova’s first Wimbledon championship and her first Grand Slam title since the 2021 French Open.
Krejcikova prevailed in a back-and-forth match with Paolini that was determined by two dramatic turnarounds in the first two sets. Krejcikova easily defeated Paolini 6-2 in the first set, but Paolini came back in the second set to win at 2-6 and force a third and final set. Paolini challenged Krejcikova until championship point in the third set, but Krejcikova’s victory was assured when Paolini hit out after two break points.
“I have no words right now. It’s unbelievable,” Krejcikova said after the match. “This is definitely the best day of my tennis career and one of the best days of my life. It’s very hard to describe what I’m feeling right now. In the end I was lucky.”
Already a 10-time doubles Grand Slam champion, Krejcikova’s victory now makes her a two-time singles champion, a feat made all the more impressive by how it was achieved. Trailing 3-6 to No. 4 Elena Rybakina after her first set on Thursday, Krejcikova rallied and pulled off the upset win, setting her up against first-time finalist Paolini to determine the new Wimbledon women’s champion.
Surprisingly, Krejcikova had won only seven matches this year before reaching Wimbledon. She had to win seven matches to win the title on Saturday.
This was the eighth different winner on the women’s side at Wimbledon in the last eight years.
